Can You Run With a Jogging Stroller in a Race?

If you’re a parent who loves running, you’ve probably asked yourself: Can I run a race with my jogging stroller? The answer? It depends on the race. Some events welcome stroller runners, while others prohibit them for safety reasons.

Here’s what you need to know before signing up with your tiny co-pilot(s).

Are Jogging Strollers Allowed in Races?

Race policies on jogging strollers vary widely. While some races are stroller-friendly, others have strict no-stroller rules due to crowding or course conditions. I’ve even seen some races created purposefully for jogging stroller use.

Here’s how to find out if your race allows jogging strollers:

  • Check the official race website – Look under race rules or FAQs. Usually they mention stroller here, along with the dreaded headphone rules.
  • Contact the race director – If stroller policies aren’t listed, send a quick email or call to the directors. I bet they will give you a clear answer and get it in the FAQs right after you hang up.
  • Look at past race photos – If you spot stroller runners from previous years, it’s a good sign they’re allowed. Don’t fully trust this though. This just gives you a ‘warm and fuzzy’, or maybe just the confidence to call and ask with some evidence of past race usage.

Many other runners, mostly non-parent runners, despise the use of strollers in a race (like this entire letsrun thread shows). I’m not saying they are right, but if you use one, just be courteous on the course, on the start line, and through the finish line. Most people who don’t like the use of strollers feel that way becasue they had a bad experience with one themselves.

It was a wet NYC Marathon and we used this stroller to maneuver the spectator crowds while cheering.

Types of Races That Allow Jogging Strollers

Certain types of races are more likely to welcome stroller runners:

  • Family-Friendly 5Ks – Many charity and community races encourage stroller participation. They want you to partake in the festivities and potentially donate to the community cause.
  • Turkey Trots & Fun Runs – These relaxed events often allow strollers, making them great for families.
  • Trail Races & Ultras – Some trail races permit strollers, but rough terrain can be a challenge. Personally, I have never seen one, but I’ve heard a wild story or two. I wouldn’t suggest doing this.
  • Big City Marathons – Some major marathons allow strollers in designated waves (though many don’t).

On the flip side, races that typically prohibit strollers include:

  • Highly competitive events
  • Crowded urban courses
  • Races with narrow or uneven terrain

Tips for Running a Race With a Jogging Stroller

If your race allows strollers, a little planning can make the experience smoother for you, your child, and fellow runners:

  • Use a proper jogging stroller – A three-wheeled stroller with a fixed front wheel ensures stability. I have used some of the better regular strollers though when on vacation or in a pinch. Just take more caution and slow down.
  • Start in the right spot – Many races require stroller runners to start in the back for safety. Plus, passing everyone will give you a bit more motivation along the way.
  • Give runners space – Be mindful when passing others and avoid sudden stops. You need extra room in front and behind you when maneuvering around the course.
  • Pack snacks and entertainment – A small toy, book, or snack can keep your little one happy. This is good for longer runs, but don’t give them anything you don’t want thrown or dropped. Otherwise, expect a bunch of mid-race stops.
  • Plan for weather – A rain cover or sunshade helps keep your child comfortable. Personally, I wouldn’t subject them to harsh weather myself, but the choice is up to you!

We have used the Schwinn jogging stroller, and even picked up a used City jogging stroller after we had boy #2. They both served their purpose and had different things we liked about them, from the wheels to the way the kids sat in them, I would recommend them both if going casual stroller jogging.

Looking for a race that’s stroller-friendly? Here are a few great options:

  • Disney’s RunDisney Races – Some races allow strollers in designated divisions.
  • Rock ‘n’ Roll Series (Select Locations) – Check individual races for stroller policies.
  • Local Turkey Trots & Holiday Runs – Many community races allow strollers.
  • Some Major Marathons – Always check race rules before signing up.

So Do They Allow Strollers?

Running a race with a jogging stroller can be an amazing experience, but only if the race allows it. Always check the rules, gear up properly, and be courteous to fellow runners.

And if your dream race doesn’t allow strollers? Consider a virtual race or a family-friendly fun run where your little one can join the adventure!
